A Milestone Summer: What VA250 Means for Our Community

A Milestone Summer: What VA250 Means for Our Community

This month, you might see a grand fireworks display, enjoy a cookout with family or friends, or maybe relax by the water or on a sunny dock. July is a time to intentionally pause and reflect on the birth of American independence, whether through literature, media, local festivities or red, white, and blue attire.

But this year, you may notice even more patriotic energy than usual. Banners along highways, refreshed logos on social media, and larger community events are popping up across Virginia. That’s because 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and the founding of the United States.

Known as VA250, this statewide initiative encourages Virginians to connect with their neighbors, explore local history, and inspire the next generation to invest in their own communities.

Your Own Backyard

In May 2025, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History hosted the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience, an immersive, hands-on “museum on wheels”, to kick-off local VA250 efforts. The exhibit, titled Out of Many, One, transformed a quad‑expandable tractor trailer into a traveling gallery filled with historic signage, interactive displays, and educational materials. Community members, students, and visitors took full advantage of the free experience.

The museum also serves as a host site for a newer Commonwealth initiative, the VA250 Passport Program. Available through the end of 2026, the passport invites residents and visitors to explore stories from across Virginia, enjoy hands-on experiences, and create lasting memories with friends and family. The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History was one of 70 historic destinations statewide participating in the program. Visitors who collect passport stamps can also enjoy discounts at select participating sites, adding another incentive to explore Virginia’s rich heritage.

The celebrations did not stop there.

Close to home, the official land speed record for a stock car was broken by the VA250 Car Project, right here in Martinsville, Virginia. Called the “Martinsville Missile,” the vehicle reached 253 miles per hour, while decked out in full VA250 branding.

Cardinal News, an independent newsroom serving Southside and Southwest Virginia, hosted a VA250 trivia night at 2 Witches Winery and Brewing Company. The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History organized a Danville Public Schools student art exhibit, exploring Danville’s rich connection to the Commonwealth and nation’s anniversary. Pittsylvania County also has plans to commemorate the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, while Caesars Virginia is hosting a free, family-friendly screening of Hamilton, the hit Broadway musical.

Get Involved

So, how can you join the celebration? Consider attending an upcoming event, share a VA250 social media post, spread awareness, and take time to learn more about the history in your own backyard.

The City of Danville is thrilled to just not take part, but to also lead meaningful initiatives to spearhead the VA250 festivities. The Danville Office of Economic Development & Tourism has formed a VA250 Committee, including local historical society, library, community members, and more. Through thoughtful conversations and event planning, the Committee is excited to bring new ideas to life and continue sharing the story of Virginia’s anniversary.

Tourism Manager and VA250 Committee Chair, Lisa Meriwether, reflects, “VA250 connects the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County to a larger story throughout the Commonwealth and the entire nation. Celebrations like this remind us how meaningful collaboration is, bringing our communities together and inviting others to experience them.”

Events, like VA250, showcase that tourism is not simply a summer activity, inviting visitors to explore Danville and Pittsylvania County when schools are closed and waterways are open; tourism is a year-round opportunity to explore history, enjoy outdoor attractions, support local businesses, and celebrate the place we call home.
