Savoring the Season
Discover Southern Virginia’s Local Flavor
December rings in a season of holiday shopping lists, family gatherings, shared meals, and the hope of snowy scenery on the horizon. In Danville and Pittsylvania County, this time of year also brings a menu of fresh flavors, new specials, and bold tastes, crafted by local businesses who intertwine comfort, community, and cuisine.
This month, let’s take a look at the seasonal tastes of Southern Virginia that shape our region’s story.
The Pod
Located in the heart of Gretna, Virginia, The Pod invites guests to sip, savor, and stay awhile. Featuring a roaring fireplace and plenty of cozy corners to enjoy, The Pod is sure to welcome those who appreciate a warm cup of coffee. Each month, the team rolls out creative specials, handwritten on a chalkboard, that capture the spirit of the season. From delicious “French Toast of the Month” flavors to innovative latte specials, this coffee shop is dedicated to keeping their menu new for guests and residents alike.
The Pod is not only a locally owned small business but also proudly woman-owned by Kate Farmer. “Owning a local restaurant not only strengthens the community but also keeps dollars close to home. It supports neighbors’ dreams and creates a welcoming and connected environment for people to enjoy. Moreover, it provides meaningful jobs where employees are valued, encouraged to grow, and proud to be part of something that makes a positive impact in their community. The creativity of our team is the heart of The Pod, and that’s what makes it a truly special place. I began with a vision, and our team has transformed it into what it is today.”

King Cropp Kitchen
Daily chef specials. A fully alpha-gal safe menu. Friendly atmosphere. King Cropp Kitchen is not only a dining destination in Danville, but a Southern Virginia staple. Every day, guests are greeted with a new dish, from “chicken and waffle” fries to savory seafood cuisine. Established in 2018, the restaurant expanded in 2020 to serve a growing customer base, all while staying true to their roots.
Owner, Darcy King, reflects, “King Cropp Kitchen is our family’s answer to a deeply personal challenge, and our gift back to the community that has embraced us. When our son Asher was diagnosed with alpha-gal at 10 months old, dining out became anxious and difficult. We couldn’t find restaurants that truly understood cross-contamination or could guarantee their ingredients. We knew other families faced the same struggle. We are blessed to offer our community quality food and service that brightens each guest’s day. When you dine locally, you’re supporting a family that pours back into this community and considers every guest part of our extended family. This is our legacy for our sons, and our love letter to a community that has given us so much.”

Known for its creativity, Ma’s Cakes serves up hundreds of cakes, cupcakes, and seasonal desserts each week, with new offerings daily, drawing in both locals and visitors to enjoy a sweet treat.
